Gordon Skillen

Gordon Skillen, CEO

Gordon Skillen started his entrepreneurial quest in the early 70's when he opened a specialty bookstore in his home town of Sudbury, Ontario at the age of 16. He moved to Vancouver a few years later and worked for some of the giants of the fast food industry before opening his first restaurant Burger Haven in New Westminster, BC and then quickly franchised numerous locations. He taught marketing on a shoestring budget to businesses all over BC through a Government of BC sponsored program. As a representative for Canada's largest hospitality association, the CRFA, he broke a 52 year sales record in his first month, and worked to train 15 other reps to achieve similar results. He is a self professed database guru and worked for many years as a business partner with an international CRM company. His sales and marketing consulting practice have allowed him the opportunity to work in a variety of industries, from hospitality to accounting.

In 2006, Gordon recognized that Canada needed a professional association for bookkeepers. His wife, Chris is a bookkeeper, and despite the fact that Canada already has three associations for bookkeepers, Gordon saw an opportunity to create something that truly helped the self employed bookkeeper to learn more and earn more. In only a few short years, his new association became the largest bookkeepers association in Canada, with over 800 members, meetings in over 23 cities, a certification exam, a members forum, national weekly and monthly webinars attended by over 300 bookkeepers and accountants, and most importantly, a retention rate averaging 90%. It is from his experience working with bookkeepers, that he came to realize that a service like iHonest was needed to protect the public.
